Bob and Otto by Robert O. Bruel (Author), Nick Bruel (Illustrator)

Bob and Otto do best-friend kinds of things together--eating leaves, digging, playing--until the day Bob decides to climb a tree, simply because . . . he has to. When the two meet again, Otto is still the same dirt-loving earthworm, but Bob has done the unthinkable: grown wings. Friendship overcomes all else in this sweet and funny story, because no matter what happens, ". . . friends are important."

How It Came Alive

Pretend Play

The children became Bob and Otto (characters from the book) during their pretend play. One would wiggle on the floor like a worm, the other would climb the stairs above as a butterfly.

Ecology

The worms and butterflies we found in our yard were seen as Bob and Otto. We further discussed ecology and how living things are connected.

Social-Emotional Learning

So much of the sibling relationship between my kids is about identity - exploring how they are similar and how they are different. This book was a great one for my daughter to see how it is OK to do something different from your best friend (in this case, her brother) and still be friends.
